Okulumuzun Avrupa Birliği Çevre konulu Erasmus + Projesi "Let's help our precious planet" kapsamında 07 Şubat 2020 tarihinde ilimizde bulunan geri dönüşüm tesisine ve katı atık düzenli depolama sahasına gezi düzenlenmiştir.

On 7 February 2020, Friday afternoon, Selçuk Anatolian High School visited a plastic recycling facility in the industrial area in Sivas and the waste disposal center of the city. There were about 20 students and three teachers on the tour.

First of all, the group visited a recycling center where various steps were observed how to convert plastic into granules. These granules can be used as raw materials for other materials like fruit boxes and pipes.

  The steps are as follows:

Plastic is put on a conveyor belt

It is sent to a machine where it is turned into small pieces

The small pieces are passed through a long pipe and dumped into another area.

They go into another machine where they are washed, dried their gas is taken away

A kind of raw material as big as a grain of rice is formed

During the visit the environmental engineer called Şennur Yalçın enlightened the group on this kind of recycling and also answered the questions which were asked.

Then, the group visited the solid waste landfill site of Sivas where an environmental engineer called Murat Karaahmetoğlu explained the students how to manage all our municipal solid waste.

Municipal solid waste is transported to this area by garbage trucks

It is put on a conveyor belt where the recyclable and reusable paper, plastic, glass, metal, etc are collected. Unfortunately, a very small percentage of the municipal solid waste (just 3 %) is reusable and recyclable because people put their household waste altogether in the same box and they do not put them in separate boxes properly. Therefore we should inform our people that all the household waste is not garbage.

It is dumped in a hole which is designed and planned for five year years.

The bottom of this hole is covered a special material so that the water of waste disposal can not mix with the soil.

Special pipes are installed properly in this hole and by means of this pipes the gas of the garbage is collected and carried to a unit in which electricity is generated.

This electricity is enough for 10,000 households and about 40000 people

In the future they are planning to generate more electricity by collecting more household disposal not only just from the city centre also from small towns and villages.

About 15 years ago there wasn't such a modern storage area to produce electricity. Municipal solid waste used to be dumped in piles then it was covered with soil

On 11 February 2020 Selçuk Anatolian High School invited   Mustafa DOĞAN who is Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization of Sivas and department manager İbrahim Kaya.

Mr Mustafa DOĞAN gave an interesting presentation on zero waste, the importance of recycling, the facts about recycling, he also answered students' questions about environmental issues. At the end of his presentation, selçuk Anatolian head master gave both Mustafa DOĞAN and İbrahim Kaya plaques for their contribution to the project )
